Shopping for Silver and Gold Hand Stamped Jewelry
Hand stamped jewelry makes a wonderful gift for birthdays, anniversaries, or “just because.” Hand stamped jewelry is a great way to wear the names of your children, husband, friends or relatives with you at all times. What a timeless keepsake! When shopping for hand stamped jewelry, it is important to remember these guidelines.
First, decide if you would like sterling silver or gold hand stamped jewelry. Sterling silver jewelry is very popular and goes great with anything in your wardrobe. It is less expensive and very affordable for most people. However, it does tarnish when exposed to the air. Because of this, you will need to provide extra care for your hand stamped silver jewelry such as polishing with a pre-treated polishing cloth and storing in an airtight container when not in use.
Gold hand stamped jewelry is more luxurious and elegant looking. However it is more expensive. Gold-filled is a less expensive material which looks and feels just like gold, but without the hefty price tag. Gold-filled hand stamped jewelry is made with a thin layer of real gold surrounding a metal core. The gold layer will not wear off like costume jewelry and can be treated just like gold! Gold hand stamped jewelry makes a great elegant gift with a personal touch.
The recessed portion of the stamped pendant is often a black color, this is called oxidization and helps the contrast between the metal and stamped letter. Be sure to ask your jewelry maker how they oxidize the recessed portion of their hand stamped jewelry. It should be oxidized with an oxidizing agent such as Liver of Sulfur or Black Max. These are substances that will not rub or wear off with usage. A cheaper, and less professional way of oxidizing pendants is using a Sharpie marker. This is not recommended because the ink will fade over time and you will lose contrast of your hand stamped jewelry.
